Rental Tips For Australian Motorhome

Rental Tips For Australian Motorhome

We can help you rent a motorhome in Australia. We've road-tripped before, but last year's lengthy NSW journey was our first motorhome rental. We had many questions! We spent five weeks in a motorhome after months of investigation.

First-time campervan hire in Melbourne might be intimidating. Booking a car and organising your itinerary seems easy at first. After browsing hire websites, the queries start…

  • Is a motorhome or RV licence required? – No!
  • Is a campervan or motorhome better?
  • What size car should I reserve?
  • Are rental firms different?
  • Which insurance do I need? Included?
  • Should I rent a motorhome with a toilet?

How Do You Determine Size?

Uncertain? Simply ask if you want a fixed bed. Many 2- and 4-berth campervans have no permanent bed. The dining/seating area becomes your bed at night. Exceptions are rare. Most firms don't guarantee layout, therefore it's hard to acquire a good bed.

In summer, you may live mostly outside the van and leave the bed made. As indicated above, it may rapidly become a pain in chilly areas, especially if you work at a desk.

What Classes Have You Heard About?

These phrases are usually used when buying rather than renting.

  • A Class — Coasters and bus-style RVs with integrated driver cabins are rarely rented.
  • B Class — Standard RVs with flat roofs and walk-throughs. Solo travellers value this.
  • C Class, often known as cab chassis, have a compartment above the driver's cabin for storage or an additional bed.

Avoid 3-tonne-only roads. You need 200mm more clearance than your height.

Australia Motorhome Rentals

Many motorhome firms provide similar vehicles, but others have distinct models or characteristics. Insurance and extras differ too.

We inspected RVs at all of these offices except Britz, which may seem excessive, but they were close to home.

Although layouts and storage vary, the quality was similar. Our must-have list made it easy to select our favourite automobiles.

Australia Motorhome Rental Savings

There are ways to lower rental costs, yet post-covid prices have climbed.

Travel Off-Season

Renting a motorhome off-season saves money. Like airline seats, motorhome rental costs treble during school vacations and long weekends. Holiday prices climb significantly.

June through September is the cheapest time to rent, while January, February, and April are the most costly.

  • Pre-book.
  • Booking early—8 weeks or more—can save you 10%.
  • Repurchase
  • If you rent again, mention that we got a big discount.
  • Book a relocation car for a short journey.

Some employers provide gasoline. This is frequently last-minute, so you can only book a few weeks ahead. We're watching Smoove for a cheap getaway.

Consider Free And Affordable Campgrounds.

When planning your journey, Australia offers several RV-friendly communities. RV-friendly municipalities provide short-term, low-cost overnight parking, free drinking water and disposal sites, and downtown parking for long RVs.

GPS – we initially dismissed this, but if you're travelling from Sydney to Perth or Alice Springs, it's useful. Even with the greatest phone plan, coverage is spotty and Google maps won't work.

Bikes—If you can ride, include them. When you need anything from the store, you don't want to set up your RV and plug in the electricity and water again. Bikes are useful because most caravan sites and camps are a km or more from town.
